If you're thinking about going on your first cruise, please don't be put off by three common myths:
1. A cruise is too expensive
2. A cruise is only for older people
3. A cruise will make me sea-sick
As we'll see, these are pure myths which could prevent you from experiencing the holiday of a lifetime.
Let's explore each one:
A cruise is too expensive
On the face of it, a cruise does appear rather expensive. After all, probably you could go on a two week holiday for much less than the price of a cruise.
So let's look at a typical holiday in the sun.
During the month of July, a 14 day self catering holiday in Spain for a couple would typically cost ?1700 - or ?850 each. Now on the face of it, that doesn't look too bad. However, because it's a self catering holiday we'll need to take along quite a sum of money for our meals.
Let's assume we have breakfast and lunch in our apartment, and we eat out in the evening. Therefore, we're looking at a reasonable budget of around ?45 per day per person, which is ?630 over 14 days.
Holiday: ?850
Meals: ?630
Total: ?1480 per person
Now let's compare this ?1480 with the price of a 14 day cruise.
A quick check of an on-line travel agent found on page 1 of Google reveals some costs: For a 15 night Mediterranean cruise in July, prices start at ?799 per person. The typical price range is ?1200 to ?1500 per person for an inside cabin.
This is beginning to look less expensive than our Spanish holiday.
But there's one thing which makes the cruise stand out:
Dining on a cruise ship is an experience all on its own. The food is first class quality and fresh. It's waiter served. It's 4 or 5 star dining. And it's included in the price of the cruise.
If you were to enjoy a similar dining experience in a London restaurant, for a single meal you'd probably expect to pay twice the ?45 we've calculated for our Spanish holiday food allowance.
So we can see that what's been propagated about a cruise being much too expensive is just a myth. What's more, if you enjoy a good food and a fine dining experience, and you'd like to wake up in a new holiday location each day, it's even better value than an ordinary holiday.
A cruise is only for older people
This may have been the case many years ago. But on modern cruise liners, you'll be surprised at the age ranges of people on a cruise.
In fact, some cruise ships are dedicated to families. Other ships have rock climbing walls and mega-adventure activities situated right on the top of the ship, which is specifically aimed at catering for teens. Some other ships are geared towards romantic couples.
Whatever your age group, you're likely to find a cruise ship to suit your taste for action, adventure, romance, sightseeing, relaxing, or simply the dining experience.
A cruise will make me sea-sick
The massive modern cruise liners don't move around the same as smaller boats do.
In addition, they're fitted with special stabilisers to reduce movement when the sea is rough.
If you're prone to motion sickness, there are many prescribed and over-the-counter pills available. Usually you'd be notified in advance about any expected rough patches the ship would be sailing through, giving you plenty of time to take your medication.
To escape sailing through any rougher waters, you could fly to a warm, calm, region such as the Caribbean. Many cruise companies sell complete fly-cruise packages. So you could fly directly from your nearest airport to an airport near to the ship. Barbados, for instance. You'd be surprised how little extra a fly-cruise costs.
So, as you can see, your first cruise is extremely likely be a very enjoyable experience, whichever age group you belong to.
If you want to visit many new and different countries and islands on one holiday, if you want to experience fine dining, enjoy an adventure, or have a relaxing or a romantic holiday, there's a cruise designed especially for you.
And it won't cost you the earth.
My wife and I went on our very first cruise in March 2012, and enjoyed it immensely. We're planning our next one already.
