If you were to ask a person off the street if they would like to go on a cruise, chances are the answer is going to be a resounding yes. That's because the word "cruise" has been associated with every possible positive phrase you could think of.
When people think of a cruise they are thinking about the beauty of the ocean, a couple of weeks of rest and relaxation and of course, dwelling in the lap of luxury. That is after all, how it's marketed. The problem is, like many other things in life, the reality isn't always the same as the fantasy. Even the most luxurious of cruise ships face problems and being prepared for these problems will help you enjoy your trip, even if things don't quite go as planned.
Among the first things that you are going to want to do before setting sail on a cruise ship is to have the right attitude and the right expectations. Think about the fact that cruise ships board thousands of people a day. That's a pretty big number and unfortunately, is part of one of the reasons why your trip might not be quite as perfect as you planned.
With all those people on board you are bound to experience one or two minor hiccups, if not more. Expect occasional problems with your toilet for example because just as waste builds up in a hotel room, you can expect the same thing to happen on your ship. Also be prepared for small glitches like a leaking faucet or a problem with a door knob. Remember that with all those people on board you can't guarantee that it's always going to be smooth sailing.
On a cruise, it is also a good idea to have a good understanding of your limits. Remember that no matter how big your cruise ship is, there is always going to be a lack of space. One floor can house hundreds of cabins and that means you have hundreds of rooms within range of any noise that you make. Although there may seem to be some space between rooms, you are still guaranteed to hear the door slam from a cabin a couple of doors away. Be mindful of other people and respect that space.
Knowing your limits can also be associated to drinking of course. A lot of people don't realize that they are loud drunks and most people love alcohol at different times of the day. Even if you are on a vacation be mindful of the impression you have on people and know where your boundaries are when it comes to drinking. Over drinking isn't dangerous just on the road, it can be dangerous and irritating on a cruise ship as well.
Something that is also extremely important when it comes to a cruise ship is safety. Although you may think that everyone on a cruise ship is rich, stop and think about whether you are rich. Everyone splurges once in a while and sometimes even someone who doesn't make much money can save up for a cruise. Be aware of this and understand that you still have to take care of your things. Keep valuables in the safe and don't go around flashing every piece of valuable jewelry you have.
These are all simple tips but remember that they can save you a huge headache when traveling via cruise.
