Of all the cruise destinations, river cruises in Europe offer up some of the most varied cruise choices. The continent has several excellent cruising rivers and this article takes a look at four of the best, to show you what's available.

The Danube

We start with one of the most popular European river cruising experience, the Danube. Thousands of people choose to enjoy one of the many Danube river cruises every year, with the majority opting for a week long voyage. The traditional Danube experience stars and ends in the German city of Passau. Highlights along the river include Linz, Vienna and Budapest, all of which make for great shore excursions. Despite its popularity many of the destinations the cruise stops at are peaceful towns, so it's a great way to enjoy the warmth of the region without the typical crowds

The Rhine

Similar in many ways to the Danube, the Rhine River offers of a great pan European cruise experience. The Rhine River runs through several European countries, making it a brilliant way to experience a lot of Europe in one go. Typical cruises run from one to three weeks, depend on how much of the river you want to cover. Highlights include Amsterdam, Bucharest and Cologne. The Rhine experience is often represented by the regions classical towns and beautiful fairytale castles that dot the surround area.

The Elbe

We have another excellent cruise that heads through Germany next, the stunning river Elbe and its wild surroundings. A typical cruise on the Elbe runs for two weeks and covers a large portion of Germany and the Czech Republic. Some of the most popular stops include Berlin, Prague, Hamburg, Wittemberg and Dresden. A cruise down the Elbe is a great way to experience German history and culture at its best, although you'll want to make it a summer cruise as the local climate can get very cold in the winter.

Douro

One of the lesser known European river cruise next, the stunning Duoro River that flows through Portugal. It's the ideal cruise for those who want a shorter experience; at only one hundred and thirty miles in length, the Duoro River can be cruised in just three days. There are a number of great stops along its length, including the cities of Porto, Barca d'Alva and Pinhao. Despite the deceptively short length, a cruise on the Duoro River is just as good an experience as some of the larger European choices.
